Haunted Hollywood Walking Tour with ExperienceFirst
Chavez Ravine is haunted by more than just the eerie specter of displaced poor people—it’s also said to have one or two actual ghosts, as well as a spooky mist. Celebrating 30 years, this huge haunted experience is one of the biggest of its kind in South Florida. This year, four attractions—Silent Mall, Drown Town, Insanitorium and Scare Studios—promise to scare the crap out of you. Tour abandoned houses and explore the supernatural if you’re brave enough. Tickets are currently on sale for House of Horror Haunted Carnival at Miami International Mall, 1625 NW 107 Avenue.

Dark Harbor will once again rise for Halloween…
The interactive play will start at the designated check-in times and lasts roughly 90 minutes, but guests are allowed to explore the manor and grounds for as long as they want (between opening and closing times). There will also be a full bar and food offerings for those planning to make this their full night outing. At House of Spirits, guests can sip on drinks while exploring a haunted, abandoned theatre. Just enjoy the ambiance if you’re skittish, or venture deeper and interact with the actors and props if you’re adventurous. Four miniature cocktails are included with a standard ticket, but you can upgrade your ticket for more, and additional food and drinks will be available for purchase. The Willows from JFI Productions has combined the haunted house and dinner theater experiences and elevated it to a new level.

Halloween is a great time to check out the puppetry at this theater, whether or not it is your first time. The theater will be performing a family-friendly Halloween Spooktacular, an hour-long show with over one hundred puppets. Costumes are encouraged and whether you bring the kids or not, it’s sure to be a fun and special experience to check out this historic puppet theater. There’s a new Halloween fest down in Long Beach this year and it came by way of Shaq—yes, Shaquille O’Neal. Shaqtoberfest will take place next to the famously haunted Queen Mary and there will be everything from a pumpkin patch, street carnival with games and rides, trick-or-treating stations, and more.
There are also the usual lights going on and off and mysterious footsteps. Peg Entwistle is probably the most famous failed actress in Los Angeles history. Depressed by her lack of success, she jumped from the Hollywood Sign’s “H” to her death in September 1932. People have reported seeing a woman near the sign matching Entwistle’s description and dressed in period clothes; some people say they’ve seen a female figure actually making the jump.

The haunted house opens on Thursday, September 29 and remains open every Tuesday through Sunday, all the way to Monday, October 31. For more information and tickets, click here to visit their website. After closing like all other major events because of the pandemic, Dark Harbor failed to return due in part to delays caused by renovations on the Queen Mary. In 2022 and the following year Shaqtoberfest took its place with walk-thru haunts, mazes, carnival rides and DJs outside the ship.
In Los Angeles, Black Lagoon will be popping up at Lost Property Bar in Hollywood, which will be decked out in spookiness. Gather your girlfriends for a classy and a little spooky afternoon tea celebration of All Hallow’s Eve. The underground bar Lilly Rose at Wayfarer DTLA is serving up a special high tea menu for the month of October with Spooky Tea, featuring ghoulish treats and cocktails. As I continued my vigilant watch over House of Horror, monitoring every shadowy corner through the unblinking eyes of surveillance cameras, an unsettling moment caught my attention one day. I observed a disquieting movement, a fleeting hint of something uncanny transpiring beneath the carnival’s eerie façade, hidden within its depths. This new place, shrouded in whispers of secrets untold, beckoned to me with an unsettling allure.
Your Theater of Terror ticket grants you behind-the-scenes access to explore classic cinematic nightmares. When it returns, Dark Harbor will once again include mazes on the Queen Mary and surrounding harbor with live entertainment, themed bars and lounges and food in the plans. Stroll through the King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains hideaway at this event that's appropriate for all ages. There are thousands of hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns arranged in various themes, from local sites (like the Hollywood sign) to classic Fright Night displays (like a cemetery). We recommend having your kid put on their costume before you go, so you’ll have some great pics for the family album (and look like you actually made an effort this Halloween, even if the night itself turns out to be a bust). I watched in fascination as she continued her ghostly vigil, gliding through the carnival with an ethereal grace.
My questions were almost all in vain, since she was as silent as a cold dreary night. However, when I inquired about this ghostly girl’s name, she disappeared in the blink of an eye, only to reappear next to me, to whisper in my ear the only thing I would ever hear from her. Located on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Pacific Theatre originally opened in 1928 as the Warner Bros. Sam Warner reportedly cursed the theatre when it wasn’t completed in time for the premiere of The Jazz Singer, the first talkie. Warner died from a cerebral hemorrhage the day before the film’s New York premiere. Warner’s ghostly figure has been glimpsed in the theatre’s lobby and offices.
Each holiday takes a turn for the worst, trapping you in a time loop of terror. Time later I would come to realize that she wasn’t merely enforcing silence for the sake of maintaining an eerie ambiance; rather, she was desperately hiding from someone—or something—ominous and malevolent. Compelled to investigate, I ventured to the very location where these mystifying events had unfolded. Universal Studio’s legendary Dracula, Bela Lugosi died in 1956 in this modest apartment near Western Avenue.
Griffith Park is all kinds of haunted, dating back supposedly to the nineteenth century, when owner Don Antonio Feliz left the land to one Don Antonio Coronel instead of to his niece, Dona Petronilla Feliz. It’s said that industrialist and eventual owner Griffith J. Griffith donated the property to the city to rid himself of the tainted land (the ostriches on his ostrich farm there apparently stampeded at night). The land is supposedly haunted by Don Antonio Feliz, Dona Petronilla, Griffith J. Griffith, a young girl, and several others, as well as some kind of humanoid beast. And, last but by no means least, make sure to check out Scare X Studios a very 2021, social-media-ready interactive experience of illusions where you’ll become the star of your very own horror movie. The Mayhem Museum is the first of the four haunted attractions at the House of Horror Haunted Carnival.
The part-interactive, part-theatrical performance experience takes place in a 10,000 square-foot mansion with a group limited to just 18 guests. Each session is two hours long and includes passed appetizers and drinks. The Willows is the brainchild of the people behind Creep LA and has become such a popular production and tickets sell out quickly every year. Children ages two and under enter free to the carnival, but are not permitted to the haunted houses.
John Hampton opened the theater in 1942 and dedicated his life to preserving silent films… using toxic chemicals that eventually gave him cancer. Lawrence Austin reopened the theater after Hampton’s death in the early nineties; in 1997, he was fatally shot in the lobby in a plot concocted by his lover/projectionist. Hampton is said to haunt the upstairs lounge while Austin covers the lobby. House of Horror promises a Halloween adventure that’s equal parts terrifying and tantalizing. So, come hungry for thrills and delicious eats, prepare for unforgettable scares, and make memories that will spook you long after you leave its haunted grounds.
House of Horror Haunted Carnival is making its spooky return to Miami International Mall for the first time since 2018.
